It’s National Dog Week, and we’d love to share with you some considerations to make when choosing the next furry love of your life. With so many dogs of varying sizes, personalities, and energy levels looking for love, determining the perfect pooch for your family can be overwhelming. Here are a few essential factors to think through before choosing your next pet.
Housing arrangement — Do you live in an apartment with little or no outdoor space? Or, perhaps you have a securely fenced yard or acres of open space. Do you have children? Other animals? These should all be considered before you commit to a particular dog.
Purebred or mixed breed — Need a dog for a specific purpose, such as hunting, herding, or protection? A purebred dog may be the way to go. There are breed-specific rescues that do a fantastic job of matching potential owners with their rescue pets. On the other hand, if you’re looking for an all-around great dog, you will surely be able to find a mixed breed that meets any of the qualities you desire. Shelters around the country are overflowing with sweet dogs, all looking for loving homes. Bonus: Mixed-breed dogs tend to be healthier than their purebred counterparts due to their hybrid vigor and ability to override some genetic conditions carried on by breeding.
Exercise requirements — Are you looking for a furry friend to help you train for your next half marathon? Or, would you rather your dog keep your feet warm while you snuggle on the couch? High-energy dogs need to expend that energy somehow. Otherwise, they could develop behavioral issues and quickly become overweight.
